A dazzling new exhibition inspired by gold, mystery and remarkable discoveries.
At its heart is the Great Baddow Hoard, the largest recorded hoard of Iron Age gold coins ever found in Britain. Buried over 2,000 years ago, this extraordinary hoard poses a tantalising question: why was so much wealth hidden? Explore how this discovery is reshaping what we thought we knew about life in Essex during a time of upheaval and the threat of Julius Caesar’s invasion.
Experience the thrill of discovery through objects unearthed by local metal detectorists, each with a story waiting to be told. Who once treasured it? Why was it lost or hidden? What secrets has it carried across the centuries?
Inspired by the mystery of the hoard, Timeless Treasures explores what makes something truly precious. From spectacular archaeological finds to deeply personal objects from the museum’s collection, the exhibition celebrates the stories we cherish from the things we treasure – then and now.
Come and explore the mystery of the gold hoard, discover the stories and decide what you treasure.
