Get Involved

There are many ways you can get involved with the Museum of Chelmsford and support us.

Volunteer with us

We have lots of ways you can help from giving a few minutes or getting involved on a more regular basis. Please note that we are unable to accommodate work experience for schools at this time. You can find out how to volunteer at Museum of Chelmsford.

Object Donations

We welcome donations, however the cost of caring for our collection is high. It is important that we do not duplicate material and that any objects that we accept meet the criteria of our Collections Policy. We cannot accept everything offered to us.

How to make a donation

Contact the museum in writing, or by phone to make an appointment with a member of the Curatorial and Learning Team. It would be helpful if you can send a picture of the object that you wish to donate before arriving at the museum.

The museum will not accept:

  • items that do not meet the criteria of our Collections Policy

  • items brought into the museum without a prior appointment being made

  • items offered on long term loan

  • any items that may be hazardous to staff or visitors

If we are not able to accept your donation we will always try to suggest an alternative recipient.

If you would like to make a bequest, contact us. Day to day donations can be made at one of our donation boxes at the museum.

Responsible Metal Detecting

Under The Treasure Act 1996, finders have a legal obligation to report all finds of potential Treasure to the local coroner in the district in which the find was made. This is usually done though a Finds Liaison Officer. The Essex Finds Liaison Officer is one of many in England and Wales working for The Portable Antiquities Scheme, run by the British Museum and Amgueddfa Cymru - Museum Wales, to encourage the recording of archaeological objects found by members of the public in England and Wales.
