On Thursdays throughout the summer holidays, join our tour guide Rachel as she returns with one of her popular talks as Mrs Wells, the wife of the former Oaklands House owner Fred Wells.
The talk will be about how the gardens of Oaklands Park were used by the Wells family as a place of leisure and agriculture. In this summertime talk and tour, Rachel will show you where the walled garden used to be and what was grown there. You will also hear about who the gardeners were and where they lived, and the kind of work they would undertake. Rachel will also talk about how the garden was used during the First World War, and how the entrepreneur Flower family brought the roaring 1920s to Oaklands, changing the landscape with tennis and lemonade parties!
The tour is free to attend with museum entry (£4 or free for members), but spaces are limited, so make sure you secure your place. Attendees will be walking around the gardens outdoors, or inside the museum if the weather takes a turn. Dressing comfortably and being prepared to move around the park or building is advised.
