The discovery of 933 gold Iron Age coins from Baddow in 2020 is one of the largest hoards of this type from Britain. Its beautiful coins are some of the earliest made here and are evidence of local society before the Roman conquest. This talk will take a deeper look at the contents of the hoard, what it can tell us about Iron Age coinage and explore the possible reasons for its burial. It will look at the wider background to the hoard in late Iron Age Britain and other finds of Treasure from Southeast England and beyond.
Eleanor Ghey is a Curator in the Department of Money and Medals at the British Museum and has worked on many hoards of Iron Age and Roman coins reported under the Treasure Act.
