Stone Age to Iron Age

Pupils can become an archaeologist for the day!

Pupils can become an archaeologist for the day!

They will handle objects, learn new skills, gather evidence, and share their findings as they investigate how and why life changed from the Stone Age to the Iron Age.

In this session, pupils will:

  • handle real artefacts and replicas to explore what they reveal about prehistoric life, using creative thinking to interpret objects like an archaeologist.

  • take part in hands-on ‘experimental archaeology’, including building a Palaeolithic shelter, grinding grain the Neolithic way, using a bow drill, and making string from flax and simple woven materials.

  • create and make, including crafting a birch bark foraging basket and designing their own torc to take home.

  • explore the museum to compare past and present, asking questions such as how Boris the Bear differs from a prehistoric cave bear.

Teacher feedback

“The four activities allowed the children to progress their skills of being an archaeologist, cave painting, daily life skills and looking at evidence. They did not know how to do this before. Lots to engage the children with, lots of objects, lots of hands on activities. All brilliant.”
